Dark Chocolate

July's food of the month is dark chocolate!

Research has shown that dark chocolate has several healing and protective qualities…and it is still quite delicious. For one, dark chocolate (which is usually at least 70% cocoa solids) has shown to reduce anxiety levels and stress in people who eat about 1 ounce of dark chocolate per day for for two weeks. Dark chocolate also is rich in antioxidants, called flavonoids, which are related to to a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. Research has also shown that if people with high blood pressure ate small pieces of dark chocolate every day, they noticed a drop in both diastolic and systolic blood pressure after a few months!

In addition, chocolate is also known for being an “aphrodisiac”. Although research has not completely supported this popular belief, most romantic moments involve having chocolate. And romantic moments, can help mend a relationship that might need some extra care.

Of course, the more sugar and fat that is added to a recipe will start to negate the positive effects of the dark chocolate so be mindful of the types of dark chocolate items you are consuming. Having a piece of pure dark chocolate is the best. But if you need it mixed in with a little something, this is the place to be!
